Scout is a very outgoing lemon beagle. He was adopted from the pound to be a bed bug detection dog and graduated in April of 2009 when he was just a year old. He is very laidback and loves attention. Scout loves to travel to do inspections on the neighbor islands.

Ally is a tricolor beagle and is a year older than Scout. She was adopted from the pound to become a bed bug detection canine and joined our team in October of 2009. She is very driven and focused so she can seem shy at first, but she warms up quickly!

Every day, Sandwich Isle Pest Solution's K9 detecting dogs Scout and Ally wake up ready and excited to go to work. After a morning workout on their treadmill, the canines start their training. One of the staff will hide bed bugs in the office or in the customized training room in order for the dogs to find them. When the K9 shows the handler where they found the bugs by alerting on the area, the handler will reward them with a treat!

Scout and Ally only get treats when they find bedbugs, so training is done only to reinforce the dogs’ ability to find bed bugs, but also to make sure they get a healthy daily portion of food. The handler will test the dogs several times to make sure they are on point. After that, the dogs enjoy a break while the handler documents their daily training status. The dogs and the handlers then get ready to go out into the field. They get a nice brush, a good wipe down and then they are ready to go out!
The dogs typically work in the field no more than 4 to 6 hours a day with a short break every hour. On larger properties, they get to ride in a stroller. This gives them a low profile, but also protects them from getting ahold of food they can't have and deters people from interrupting their focus. Scout and Ally aren't your average dogs; like many working and service dogs they cannot be petted and cuddled when they are working. This may distract them from their job!
After field work, Scout and Ally return to the office where they nap until the handler finishes paper work and other tasks. They then head home with our K9 manager and relax the night away!
Testimonial:
"When I went on vacation this year, I found myself covered in mysterious bites. With all the news about bed bugs, I didn't want to take any chances. I had heard of bed bug sniffing dogs, so as soon as I returned to Hawaii, I put my bags and scuba gear in the garage and called K9 Scent Detection Hawaii. Scout and Victoria were there in a matter of hours. Not only did they confirm there were bed bugs in my suitcases- but they also let me know my bedroom had NOT been infested! We were so impressed, we even had a second K9 inspection a week later- when my wife came home with the kids. This time, Lani and Ally put my family at ease so we could SLEEP TIGHT, knowing that we had kept these bugs at bay. THANKS GUYS!!!!"
